PROBIOTICS - MICROORGANISMS USEFUL FOR HUMAN HEALTH

WHAT THEY ARE AND THE BENEFITS FOR OUR HEALTH

According to the official definition of the FAO/WHO, *probiotics are live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.

Probiotics are mainly used to rebalance the intestinal microbiota, which may be altered - for example - following antibiotic therapy or clinical manifestations (such as constipation, diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, gastric acidity and inflammatory diseases). Moreover, as numerous studies show, they can have beneficial effects on the entire organism, especially in areas where there is a higher concentration of bacterial load (e.g. oral cavity, skin, genitals).

Which products are they found in

Foods/supplements with probiotics are defined as those foods containing, in sufficiently high numbers, live and active probiotic microorganisms capable of reaching the gut, multiplying and exerting a balancing action on the intestinal microflora through direct colonisation (salute.gov.it).

Probiotics can be incorporated into various types of products such as foods, food substitutes, dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, over-the-counter drugs and prescription drugs.

Companies in these sectors are constantly looking for new fields of application to offer innovative products to their target market.

Supplementation with probiotics has progressively spread and become a consumption habit, prompting market supply.
